THE SEARCH FOR HARANA ARTWORK COLLECTION
This series of photographs were taken during the making of Harana documentary film which chronicles Florante Aguilar's search for master haranistas in the Philippines.
The harana being predominantly a rural custom, its most authentic practitioners may only be found in the outlying provinces.
Florante, along with the film crew of 12, tracked leads that brought them to remote areas - from the mountains of Quezon Province and the fields of Maragondon, Cavite to the old Spanish settlement and coastal regions of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur - capturing along the way, some of the most characteristic elements and spirit inherent in that particular region.
The Harana crew is blessed with visual talents - chief among them are director Benito Bautista, award-winning cinematographer Peggy Peralta, Vogue Magazine photographer BJ Formento, Assistant Director Emma Francisco, Production Photographer Lourdes Figueroa and Producer Fides Enriquez.
During the course of the filming, it became apparent that the search for haranistas was meaningful not only to Florante but also to the rest of the Filipino-American crew who, feeling a deep connection to their culture, lovingly took many photographs that captured the spirit and beauty of the regions.
We hope that you enjoy this series as these photos hearkens back, in crystalline clarity, to a genuine Filipino cultural identity.
